Heat therapy has been long associated with comfort and relaxation but it also goes a step further and can provide both pain relief and healing benefits for many type of muscle injuries. Heat therapy is a great method of providing immediate relief for sore, tight and stiff muscles and joints.
Heat helps the blood vessels dilate which in turn increases the flow of oxygen rich blood to the affected areas, helping with quicker healing and regeneration of damaged tissues. Increased blood flow provides increased nutrients, oxygen and proteins, all of which are imperative to better healing,
Heat also acts as a pain reliever by successfully stimulation the specialized pain receptors within your skin. This decreases the frequency of pain messages that are sent to the brain from other body pains.
For many people, using a What bag combines with other treatment modalities works best. Such as massage, physical therapy, exercise and medications.

* Note: from my personal learning in injury management, I do not recommend heat applied within the first 72 hours when an injury is at its acute stage with pain, bleeding/bruising or swelling is at its worse. Normal first aid. I.C.E. should be followed or professional consultation.
